I think HCMC is a city that has many sides to it. Many people usually have the impression that HCMC is a place that is traditional and not so urban, similar to the Hanoi area. After this trip, I have seen parts of HCMC that I have never seen before, which are very polished and urban. In the different districts, I actually see many different types of HCMC.

Culture is a rich mix of beliefs, designs, practices, arts and more. Each culture has its own distinctive characteristics that makes it unique and different from other cultures, and some cultures might have similarities.

The main factor that influences the culture of a country is the people there, as well as the history of the country. It depends on what the people in the past started to believe in and do, which slowly builds up and forms a rich culture over the years.

Essential Question 1
How is retail development a reflection of a country’s development?
Retail development affects the economy strength of a country. If the retail development is progressing well, the country will thus have better earnings and be able to purchase better equipments etc. to upgrade the whole country and thus will have a better image showcased to others around the world compared to a country that is still working hard to upgrade it's facilities.

What is your impression of Ho Chi Minh City?
My first impression is that the houses, shops and hotels are actually quite packed together compared to in Singapore. Also there are not many tall buildings, most buildings are actually less than 10 levels tall compared to Singapore where there are so many HDB flats. Another thing is that the traffic actually has more motorcycles than cars and honks could be heard every time.

How is retail development a reflection of a country’s development?
Retail development affects the countries’ economy, and if the country has a good economy, it can use the money to better develop its infrastructure and roads. Another reason is that more developed countries may sell similar items at a higher price than a developing country, showing that the cost of living is higher. The type of goods sold(branded items, luxury items) could also show whether the country is more developed.

What is your impression of Ho Chi Minh City?
Ho Chi Minh City is a nice place, with a unique culture and beautiful sceneries. It is still developing, but I believe that it will become a busy and major city in the world. It is currently building high-rise infrastructure and upgrading its roads, which will surely be effective in attracting investors and tourists.

HCMC is a place that has a rich culture that can be seen in every area. HCMC's traffic is on another level that we Singaporeans won't be able to handle if we went there without any knowledge of it before we venture to their country.

It can reflect the current state of the country's economy and the state of the citizens. If the price of the goods are lowly priced you can tell that the citizens might not have very high income - if they are packaged in small amounts you can also tell that their income isn't that high. If the same item keeps on appearing over and over again you can also tell that the type of the good is doing very well or is very popular.

My impressionHCMC is that it is a slowly developing city that is encompassing different types of city planning from different countries that have the same space and excel with such spaces. A culture is a special flair to a country that has been accumulated over the 'life span' of the country based on its roots, experiences and ideals. The culture will mold the city scape and the architecture of each structure and way of thinking.

I think that the history, ideals/beliefs influence the culture of the country. The past can take its toll on the thinking of the people which will undoubtedly serve as a foundation for their culture. However, the present can also change their thinking since we are living in such a time where power is almost everything. It shows the country's development as the more advanced the retail development is in the country, the more developed the country is-- retail development can be rather costly, and once the retail department of the country is quite developed, it will start to bring in a steady income, and the country can then also continue to develop.

The retail development reflects the country's economy and the people's well-being. When the country has stable economy with a steady flow of income and resources, it can be shown by what is mainly sold in common retail stores throughout the country, as well as the improving conditions of the stores, from roadside stalls to large, rented retail space in shopping centres.

My impression of HCMC is that it is a steadily developing city, with help from other countries, it has planned for future towns for the steadily rising population. It is a developing cities with areas of different modern advancements. For example many areas would be formed through less modernized buildings while others have many modernized buildings, shops and technology.

What is your impression of HCMC?
HCMC seems to be a very traditional city, still developing. The traffic is busier than Singapore's and it is harder to cross the roads. Rather than modernized shopping malls, there are more roadside stalls. However, there are modernized areas, not often frequented though. I do realize through the days that HCMC has very natural and nice environment. Away from the city are lots of plains and plantations, a stark contrast with Singapore's concrete jungle. I like that part of HCMC a lot.

The way the citizens behave, the environment the country offers and the economic state of the country influences the culture of a country. The citizens may have different complex beliefs that will cause the country to have a different culture to accommodate their needs. The environment of a country allows the people to live differently, and the environment can offer different raw materials that will affect the economic state of the country, thus giving the country the ability to develop and improve on different cultures.
How is the retail development, a reflection of a country's development?
The development is very well done, as there is an obvious difference in the hypermarkets from the traditional markets. However, the hypermarkets are currently not well-suited to the needs of the citizens of HCMC as it seems that the hypermarkets have much lesser people than the traditional markets even though they have better facilities. It is possibly due to the fact that development is incomplete. However, a great improvement in the modernization can be seen and the use of the concept "live-work-play-learn" is obvious.

Day 5 EQ1: Retail development is a image of the country's economy. The more expensive and wider the range of the goods sold, it shows that the country has a better and more well off economy. The better economy leads to a even better country development which goes in hand with each other.
Day 6 EQ1: HCMC is a relatively huge city with a special culture. It is the main city in the south of Vietnam and it looks very modernised in certain areas. The French, Chinese and American influence are visible and heightens the first impression of the city. HCMC has many visible signs of a developing city like the on-going constructions of new districts and megamalls.

HCMC's is very hot, has a lot of motorcycles and is very congested at certain areas. Unlike other countries where when you step out of the comfort of the bus and expect cold wind to hit you in the face, it is the hot dry feeling that is somewhat like Singapore, only warmer. The different styles of which each district seems to be planned is cool, and although it is still a developing country, it is beginning to develop into a country where many opportunities may grow.

The retail development is dependent on many different aspects which include the number of tourist the country gets on average, as when tourists spend money here, they contribute to the income of that country. With a high retail development, we can say that that country has many visitors there who are willing to spend their money on goods there. Thus, it is also inferable that that country is a popular tourist destination and is developed in terms of attraction of tourist into that country. If a particular country's retail development is generally low, the country would not be a popular tourist destination where people would come to to spend money. Thus, making the country's development not quite as successful as other countries would be if they have a higher retail development. For a country to have a high retail development, the country must be popular. For a country to be popular, a country must be able to present themselves as a good place to be at and spend their money at. For that to happen, a country must first be developed enough for people to want to come and visit. Thus, a country's retail development does reflect on the county's development.

It is a city which is still developing but will surely develop into a major city. Despite it having messy roads and a poor traffic control, the city is developing into one which is organized. More modern buildings are being developed in the city too and so it will be able to progress in the future. It still has it's own unique people and cultures unlike most other cities and has stuck with its roots.

This also shows how much a country can spend on developing either a more modernized shopping mall, or whether it is just a market. Should the people of the country be able to spend more money on luxury items, this shows how much the country as a whole has developed, since a country should only be as successful as its people.

I think that HCMC is a nice place, though it can be messy and chaotic at times. It is still in the midst of growing, but is advancing well and steadily. HCMC has a unique culture, and preserves its culture well, so that the old and new can still be differentiated.

Day 4 Reflections-Bryan Kong
EQ1: Singapore has a small land and an overgrowing population. Their land is also not enough to grow lots of crops. There are even some resources they are unable to get on their land. Thus, they need to get these important resources from other countries. The way to get these resources is to maintain a good relationship with them. Therefore, Singapore helped Vietnam to build their country.
EQ2:Singapore helped in Vietnam's urban planning. Thus, some of the houses seen there look similar to those in Singapore, an example would be HDB. One of the concept is: Live, Work, Play and Learn.

Day 4 Reflections - Matthew
EQ1. Why is it important for Singapore to invest in Vietnam?
Singapore is a small country with small work forces deployed in each factory, thus when mass producing objects such as coffee or other items, the duration is much longer and the profit isn't that good if the objects dont sell. Vietnam on the other hand is a larger country with a much larger population which will have larger work forces in factories and other work sites. If they invest in Vietnam they might be able to set up factories with the vietnam workforce which will push sales up by a huge percentage. Singapore and Vietnam have ongoing projects with each other it would allow Singapore to set up factories, schools etc. in Vietnam this is boost Vietnams economic and other factors which will prove to be a win-win situation for both countries.
EQ2. How Singapore influences Vietnam?
Singapore's urban planning uses the 'Live - Play - Work - Learn' concept and design. In a certain area there will be a workplace with eateries beside it and some place nearby there will be housing for those workers and shopping centres for relaxation and play. This planning is very eminent in Vietnam Singapore Industrial Park (VSIP) where the work places, and other components of the concept are close to each other and separated which allows for the workers to eat in just a few steps. The roads are much wider there and housing is close to some workplaces.

If they invest in Vietnam they might be able to set up factories with the vietnam workforce which will push sales up by a huge percentage. Today we visited the Vietnam Singapore Industrial Park(VSIP) and we learned about the relations between Vietnam and Singapore from an industrial point of view.We learned much more about the different buildings through a presentation.
We also went around the industrial park looking at the layout of the place as well as various companies that have set up in the place it was intersting as many familiar companies were in the complex showing how popular the place was for business.

EQ1. What is architecture?
It is the art of designing buildings using various things like, shape and form. These various building are most of the time unique and creative.
EQ2. What are the essential considerations when designing architecture?
The essential considerations are the amount of space the building takes up, how long it will be able to last, how much it will cost to build, how long it will take to build, whether it will be able to carry out it's purpose and the different type of materials used to build the building. The architect should also think whether the people of the area would be affected by the construction and so, they have to make adjustments to suit the people too.

Architecture is the art or practice of designing and constructing buildings. A proper and well architecture takes consideration from all aspects which include the proper location for purpose, the proper positioning, appropriate size, structure to function and the materials used to make the structure. We saw many different structures today in the older parts of Saigon and the modern Ho Chi Minh City, Ranging from olden days churches to skyscrapers. Proper architecture should also be aesthetically pleasing along side being able to function according to what it should and be strong and long lasting.

Many different considerations need to be taken when architecting. A structure needs to be able to carry out the function that was the point of it, be it to be a attraction, a bridge to transport cars and busses or to be a workplace. The proper location and position is also important when making a structure and this also depends on the general purpose of it. For example, making an attraction in the middle of many industrial buildings may not be the most ideal location to be an effective attraction. The materials used is another essential consideration that needs to be thought about when architecting. If the material is not appropriate to the location the structure is and appropriate to the function, that would just defeat the purpose of the structure.

The essential considerations would be whether the buildings design is able to withstand the designs without collapsing or putting others in danger, whether it would be able to serve its purpose and is not just for show. The amount of time required to construct it, the cost of it and also the location of it.

Architecture is an art at which is showcased or expressed through designs of buildings and structures
EQ2: What are the essential considerations when one architects a building/structure?
The essential conditions would include the space the structure would take up, the basic materials necessary to build the structure, the time it would take to build the structure as well as the different rooms or separate spaces used for different purposes which require different layouts and are of special and specific designs. The design of the buildings also have to bring out the 'essence' and purpose.
The colour and materials used in the church had to be taken into consideration and architects would have to make sure they were getting the correct materials.
Certain buildings have certain features that allow water/ rain to flow from the roof

What is architecture?
An architecture is the design of a man-made structure that is designed in a particular way. They usually have unique or complex designs, and is built with certain functions. The functions of its design could be just to spruce up the landscape, or the designs may have functions like observing the scenery or holding a stadium inside the building.
Essential Question 2
What are the essential considerations when designing architecture?
An essential consideration could be the safety of the building. For example, a 100-storey building cannot be supported by weak wooden stilts, or a wooden tower cannot be in the middle of a place where fire occurs often. Other essential considerations could be whether the design serves the function, or does not negatively affect it, and also the location of the architecture.
